DESCRIPTION OF ILLNESS AND RECOVERY IN SECRET GARDEN

The novel namely ‘’Secret Garden’’ was written by Frances Hodgson Burnett,which is a story about children who were unwanted by their parents.This has novel endured enormous fame since its publication in 1911.It is about a lonely, spoiled and a young protoganist, Mary Lennox . Mary`s journays to completely different destinations in this novel – both physical and spiritual – have been followed by young readers. In the beginning of the novel, contrary and orphaned Mary is brought from her home , birthplace in India to her uncle Archibald`s house located in one of the moors of England. Mary`s personality is changed totally after starting to live in her uncle`s manor , in other words it is on the moor and a secret locked garden where Mary starts healing her mind, soul and body. In the process of leading a life on the moor , sooner Mary adopts and learns about the lifestyle of its inhabitants. This literary work communicates to its readers themes such as death, illness, and as well as recovery. The reason for this is that, it is addressing both serious and sometimes relatable problems of main characters. In the beginning of the story Mary is surrounded with the death of people including her parents which barely effects to the spoiled and selfish young girl. It was called in the theme as illness, because Mary was very much aloe child without any friends or people who cares about her. During the widespread of contagious disease , no one thought of her and even nobody wanted that child. Death and sickness are the main themes which can give the initial impression of the book to its readers.
