Identity, identity work, identification, subjectivity, and the subject: interest in identity seems to have reached a level not previously known in critical management studies (CMS). Concepts of the self are not new to the study of management and organisation. From Durkheim’s anomy and Marx’s alienation, to the socially constructed self of Cooley and Mead , and the dramaturgical self of Goffman , through to the social identity theory of Tajfel and Turner , identity has underpinned many ideas in sociological and psychological studies on individuals and organisations. In contemporary theorising, one might also point to the influence of a disparate range of theorists, including: Barth, Bruner, Ricoeur, Elias, Butler, Lacan, Laclau, Žižek, and, probably the most influential in critical management studies on identities, Foucault. It is perhaps because of the appeal to both the individual and the collective that identity has proven to be a particularly attractive area for research .References
